Winter Storm Watch for Stanly County
Winter storm watch in effect from Friday afternoon through saturday afternoon, The NWS in raleigh has issued a winter storm watch, which is in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Basis, a cold front will move south across central North Carolina late today with dramatically colder air surging into central north carolina on Friday. A storm system will develop across the northern gulf of mexico on Friday and then move east- northeast off the southeast coast on Saturday.
Precipitation types and accumulation, although it is too early to specify exact amounts, at this time it appears that there will be enough cold air to support significant wintry precipitation in the watch area. Locations near the Virginia border are likely to see mainly snow. Further south near the u.s. 64 corridor, the precipitation is likely to be more of a mix of snow and sleet. Across the southern piedmont into the central coastal plain a mixture of freezing rain an sleet will be possible.
Timing and duration, precipitation is expected to overspread the watch area from southwest Friday evening and continue through saturday. The heaviest precipitation is likely to fall from midnight Friday night through midday Saturday.
Impacts, while details are still difficult to pinpoint at this time, there is an increasing potential for a significant winter storm across the watch area. Accumulations of snow and ice are expected to adversely impact travel and potentially result in downed trees and powerlines. After the precipitation sets in friday evening, temperatures are expected to remain near or below freezing through midday Monday. A winter storm watch is issued when severe winter weather is possible, but not imminent. At the time, there is potential for significant snow and/or ice accumulations. Now is the time to be thinking about emergency supplies, before winter storm conditions arrive. Stock an emergency supply of food and water prior to the onset of a winter storm. Also keep on hand a flash light, battery powered radio, extra batteries and a first aid kit. Those planning travel across the region during this time should consider alternate plans, as travel may become dangerous.

YMCA's Third Annual Father/Daughter Dance was a Hit!
The Stanly County Family YMCA held its annual Father/Daughter Dance on Friday, February 13th. The dance is an effort to bring fathers, daughters, grandfathers, granddaughters, uncles, nieces, "adopted" families and friends together for an evening of fun, dancing and refreshments.
Approximately 50 families participated in this year's event. Some fathers/grandfathers brought two or three young ladies with which to spend the evening. The gym floor was crowded with couples dancing to favorites like "My Girl" and "YMCA". Between dances, couples had their pictures taken together as a remembrance. Valentine refreshments were served throughout the evening. Each girl left with a flower of their choice and a bag of goodies.
