Junior United Way Board Offers Community Mini Grants
The Junior United Way board has started its annual applications process for community mini grants. Grants ranging from $100 to $2,000 will be awarded to any group or organization in Stanly County working to better the community. Applications are available by contacting the United Way office at 704-982-6916. The deadline to submit an application is Thursday, April 29th.
The JUWB awarded $5,000 in local grants just last year. The money was used for programs such as car seats for the Safe Kids program, cages for the animal shelter and helping Habitat for Humanity with future builds.
High school students from
across the county serve on the Junior United Way
Board and raise the money for the grants. JUWB
began in the fall of 2001 as a collaboration
between the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce and
the United Way of Stanly County. "Junior United
Way is a great opportunity to teach high school
students how non-profits work and their
importance," commented Jennifer Moxley, executive
director of the Stanly County United Way. Both
United Way and the Chamber match funds raised by
the group of high school students. "When the
Junior United Way Board comes to us with $1,000
the students raised through donut sales for
instance," Chamber President/CEO Marianne Bright
explained, "we will match that $1,000 with money
from our Matching Grant Fund. This has taken
philanthropy and community service to the next
level."
