OPEN TOWER

On Monday, July 6 and Tuesday, July 7, the Rock Creek Park rappelling tower will be open from 1:30 to 4:30 pm for climbing and rapelling, led by AP&R Challenge staff. FALL SOFTBALL LEAGUES

***NEW***
Albemarle Parks and Recreation will offer Mens Church and Adult Co-ed softball leagues this fall. Both leagues are for ages 16 and up. Entry fee will be set at the mandatory captains meeting on July 13. Teams must pay a $50 non-refundable deposit at time of registration to hold its place in the league. CHALLENGE

This is a week-long program for ages 9 to 15 which includes ropes course activities, camping, hiking, canoeing, rappelling, and outdoors adventures. Pre- registration is required. Short courses meet 8 am to noon for one week, and extended courses meet all day for one week, and include an out-of-town camping trip. Cost is $35 (resident) and $50 (non- resident) for short courses, and $50 (resident) and $75 (non-resident) for extended courses. Call 704-984- 9560 for questions or further information.


FALL SOCCER REGISTRATION

Albemarle Parks and Recreation is currently accepting registration for its fall youth soccer program. This program focuses on equal participation and fun for all. Leagues are offered for ages 5 to 16, and matches are played on Saturdays. Practices will begin in August, with games starting in early September. Cost to register is $25 (residents) and $50 (non-resident). Register at the AP&R office. Call 704-984-9560 for further information.


SWIM LESSONS

Openings are still available in swim lesson classes. Lessons are two weeks in length and are available for youngsters ages 6 months and up. Morning and evening classes are available, and sessions begin on July 6, July 20, and August 3. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, with Fridays used to make up weather postponements. Cost for lessons is $30 for city residents and $45 for non-residents. For further information, call the AP&R office at 704-984- 9560.


NYSCA SOCCER COACHES TRAINING

This training clinic will be held on Tuesday, August 4 at the E.E. Waddell Center from 6 to 9 pm. National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) training is mandatory for first-time AP&R coaches, and focuses on coaching with the physical and emotional well-being of the young athlete in mind. The clinic includes information on skills development, practice organization, conditioning, and nutrition. Cost is $20 for non-AP&R coaches. ALBEMARLE PARKS AND RECREATION OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT

***NEW***
The Albemarle Parks and Recreation Open Tennis Tournament will be held beginning July 7 at the Morehead Park Tennis Courts. Play will be held in U14 and Open Divisions, and additional divisions will be formed if there is sufficient interest. The cost to register for the tournament is $10 (resident) and $15 (non-resident), plus a can of hard-court tennis balls. Registration can be done at the Albemarle Parks and Recreation office, or by calling tournament director Chris Potter at 704- 244-1855.


CHALLENGER SOCCER CAMP

This one-week soccer camp will be held August 3-7 at the Albemarle Soccer Complex, and will be led by professional and college soccer players contracted through Challenger. Registrants will receive a free soccer ball and shirt. Sessions are available for ages 3 to 16, and range in length from one hour a day to half a day. Cost varies with age and session, and ranges from $69 to $112. After July 25, a $10 late fee will be charged to registrants. Register at the AP&R office, or do so online at www.challengersports.com. SPLASH BASH

Come join us for an afternoon of games, refreshments, and competitions during regular pool hours July 11 at Rock Creek and August 8 at Morehead. Regular pool admission charges will apply.


SAILING CLASS

Learn the basics of small boat sailing on AMF Sunfish sailboats. Next session is August 10-13. Wear old tennis shoes and swim suits .Pre-registration is required, and cost is as follows: Adult resident: $10, Adult non-resident: $20. Youth resident $5, Youth non-resident $10. The first day of the first session will meet from 1:30 to 4 pm and remaining days will meet from 1 pm to 4:30 pm. The second session will meet from 1 pm to 5 pm Monday thru Wednesday and 9 am to 1 pm on Thursday. For additional information, call 704-984-9560.


YOGA-Classes

YOGA-Classes will be Mondays, Aug. 17-Sept. 28 from 6pm-7pm and are great for the beginner. This class caters to the different needs of seniors, including modified postures, increasing balance, gentle stretching, and stress and anxiety management The cost is $15 per person and we must have 10 individuals for the class to make. Payments are due by Mon., Aug. 10.

SOCCER OFFICIATING TRAINING

This clinic is for ages 15 and up, and focuses on the rules and mechanics of officiating youth soccer, and will be held at the E.E. Waddell Center on August 22 from 9 am to 1 pm. The class will include both classroom and on-field instruction. Cost is $10 per person, and includes rulebook. Pre- registration by phone is required by calling the AP&R office at 704-984-9560.


TENNIS INSTRUCTION

Learn tennis and youll love it for a lifetime! AP&R offers youth instructional classes in two week sessions beginning on June 22, July 13, and July 27. Classes are offered for ages 5-7, 8- 9, 10-12, and 13-up. Cost is $20 (residents) and $40 (non-residents) and participants are to bring a can of tennis balls to their first class. HIKING CLUB!!

The Uwharrie Hikers, a new hiking club for residents of Stanly, Montgomery, and Randolph counties (and neighboring areas) has been formed and invites members of all ages who enjoy the outdoors to join us for regular hikes and outings. There is no fee to join the club, but members must complete an Albemarle Parks and Recreation release and information form before participating in any club event. LOANER RODS AND REELS AVAILABLE (Ongoing Program)
Whether you want to tangle with the legendary monster catfish in Badin Lake or fill up a stringer on Rocky River, first-time and novice anglers in Stanly County are encouraged to borrow rods and reels free of charge to get in on Stanly County's hot fishing action this spring and summer. The loaner rods and reels are located at Rock Creek Park and provided by the Albemarle Parks & Recreation and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC), through the WRC's Fishing Tackle Loaner Program.
